What is a Mobile App?

Mobile apps are small applications that run on mobile devices. Think of them as small computer programs developed to serve specific purposes on a mobile device.

So what’s a Mobile Device?

There are three main mobile devices, iPhones, iPads, and Android phones. Other mobile devices include Android tablets, Windows Phones, and Blackberry Phones.

What’s the difference between iPhones, iPads, and Android Phones?

iPhones and iPads are made by Apple, and run on the iOS operating system. Android phones are made by many companies, but they all run on the Google Android operating system.

Can one app run on all devices?

No. In order for your app to be available on all three major devices you need to develop at least two versions of your app, one for iOS and one for Android OS. iPads are capable of running most iPhone apps, but only allow some functionality. The ability to make a phone call, for instance, is not included in the iPad.

Apps vs. Mobile Webs

What is a mobile Website?

A Mobile Website is a website specially formatted and structured to optimize a user’s experience when viewing the site on a mobile device. Mobile Websites generally take into account the smaller screen size of the mobile device in comparison to a computer monitor, and the differences caused by using your phone screen, or possible keyboard, for user interaction, as opposed to a full keyboard and mouse.

What’s the difference between a Mobile App and a Mobile Website?

The most fundamental difference is that mobile apps are downloaded through an App Market or iTunes, and a mobile website is browsed to from an Internet browser on a mobile device. A Mobile Website will always require the user to have an active connection to the mobile device’s service provider (Verizon, US Cellular), but a Mobile App can be built to be used without an active connection.

I Already have a Website

Don’t think of an app as just a website on your phone. Apps are so much more powerful. Apps utilize the powerful tools that are built into today’s smartphones, such as location finding, pictures, video, one – touch dialing, and shake features. Owning real estate on your customers’, members’ or citizens’ smartphones is an invaluable asset for your organization. Think of an individual app as a powerful tool to accomplish specific tasks.

It Sounds Expensive

Consider your investment spread over the next three to five years. Years ago your website required an up front investment that seemed high at the time but no credible business or organization is without one today. This is simply the next adaption to reach people where they are – on their mobile phone. Used correctly your app reaches new customers/visitors/donors and makes it easier for current ones to interact with you. Interacting/buying/sharing your product or service on a mobile smartphone is the most convenient way for your audience to do business. Investment in a mobile app will lead to increased revenue, customer loyalty and satisfaction.
